News & essays

Pull up a chair. Here’s what we actually think.

These are the essays behind the scores — written the way we’d talk after church, not the way a brief is filed. Same honesty: we don’t invent winners, and a win doesn’t raise a number.

Unofficial, from August 18. The stamps on the home guide come from county election-night tables and Florida Election Watch. They are not the certified canvass. If you’re already looking at November, start with the featured essay.

What this tab is for

If you just want a ZIP and a card, stay on the guide. This page is the long version — the essays we write when a number on a card isn’t enough. Tuesday, August 18 is over. November 3 is not. A lot of church parking lots are going to vote a different paper in the fall than they voted last week.

Unofficial, because we will not pretend a network graphic is a canvass: Byron Donalds and David Jolly are the governor pair. Ashley Moody and Angie Nixon are the Senate special pair. In Orange County, Tiffany Moore Russell and Chris Messina go to a mayor runoff. Scores did not move because someone won. Fishback is still 41 / 35 / 15. Messina is still 38 / 32 / 19. A Winner stamp is not a halo.

Read one race essay if that’s your ballot. Read how we score if you want the 45 / 35 / 20 math, including why mean campaigning can take a couple of Christian points without wiping a Jesus trail. Then pull a new sample ballot by full address before October. The August PDF is the wrong document now.

After August 18: what November 3 still decides

Tuesday nominated. November is when the whole church parking lot votes — Republican, Democrat, or NPA. Unofficial: Donalds and Jolly, Moody and Nixon, Russell and Messina.

Don’t reuse your August sample ballot in October. The pair changes. The amendments show up.
