Athens still remembers and Christendom is not optional
Simon Kent’s Breitbart report says U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will speak in Athens and put Christendom in the middle of a Western inheritance that runs from Greece and Rome to the American founding. Christian first means that middle word is not optional.
Simon Kent’s Breitbart report says U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will use an address in Athens on Wednesday to renew his call for Americans and Europeans to join as one in a great renewal of the Western spirit and that he sees a common heritage stretching from the ancient Greek capital and Rome to Christendom and the founding of the American Republic. Breitbart places the speech at the Pnyx near the Acropolis ahead of a strategic dialogue with Greece on regional and energy security. Assistant Secretary for Global Public Affairs Dylan Johnson told reporters according to AFP as carried by Breitbart that Rubio will call upon Americans and Europeans alike to join together in a great renewal of the Western spirit an inheritance stretching from Athens and Rome to Christendom to the founding of the American Republic and that he will warn that too much of our civilisation has forgotten these essential qualities and urge allies across the West to join the United States in rejecting decline defending shared heritage and confronting a new era of great-power competition together. Breitbart notes Rubio in February urged Europe to join the United States to deter the forces of civilisational erasure that menace both America and Europe alike and that he called the delusion of globalism and the decision to allow mass migration into the West a threat to the future of Europe and its peoples. Breitbart also reports Greek police saying more than 2,000 demonstrators gathered in central Athens on Tuesday to protest Rubio’s visit.
Be honest first because Christians are supposed to be. This is a State Department preview of a speech and not the finished sermon and we will not invent a line Rubio has not delivered yet. But the word they put on the page is Christendom. Not as a footnote. Not as a tourist plaque between the Parthenon and Independence Hall. As the middle of the inheritance. Athens and Rome and then the Church and then a republic that still borrows its moral vocabulary from Scripture whether the campuses admit it or not. When a civilization forgets that middle it does not become freer. It becomes thinner. It starts calling the Cross optional and then wonders why the children stop knowing what a person is and why the streets fill with people who never signed the old covenant of neighbor and why the West keeps talking about values while emptying the churches that taught them.
And still the Church does not get to outsource its job to a podium on a Greek hill. If the West needs a renewal of spirit then that renewal starts with repentance and the Gospel and not with a diplomatic itinerary. Jesus did not send the apostles to manage great-power competition. He sent them to make disciples of all nations. A secretary of state can name Christendom and we can thank God when he does it out loud from Athens. But Christendom was never a State Department brand. It was baptism and bread and a people who believed a crucified carpenter rose from the dead and that every neighbor carries an immortal soul. If France is burning and the Channel is a highway and young Cubans are silenced while their priests say Enough then the Christian answer is not to clap for a speech and go home. It is to pray for Europe by name and for America by name and for Cuba by name and to keep telling the truth that a West without the Cross is just marble and markets and a memory that grows cold.
Christian first means Christendom is not a museum label and that we answer to Jesus before we answer to any alliance or any address from the Pnyx. American second means the founding sits inside that inheritance and that a free people can still say in public that Athens and Rome were not enough without the Gospel that remade them. Republican third means the GOP is not the point. Our Lord was not counting midterm ads when He told us the gates of hell would not prevail against His Church and a party that wants Christians to vote in November does not get to turn a Greece itinerary into a fundraising email and call that faith. Christians were not put here to win an argument about civilizational decline. We were put here to be the salt that keeps a civilization from rotting and the light that still names the Name.
Being a Christian in America this week is watching Athens get named again and remembering that the middle of the list is still the Cross. Keep the faith. Keep your mouth full of the Gospel. And do not confuse a State Department preview with the finished work because the finished work already walked out of a tomb and is still gathering a people who will not forget.
