Why it matters that Christians vote

Florida’s statewide primary was Tuesday, August 18, 2026. August 18 nominated. This page will not invent who the parties nominated. November 3 is the next statewide date. No verse says stay out of public life

There is no Bible verse that says “don’t mix religion and politics.” That slogan is newer than the New Testament. Mike Winger’s point, in our words, is that people treat the slogan as if Paul wrote it, then treat staying home as moral hygiene. Paul did not write it. An empty box does not recruit a better name. It leaves the printed names to the people who showed up.

The Bible also never says “Thou shalt vote.” Say that honestly. Israel did not run a closed primary. Caesar did not mail a sample ballot. The argument is not that a Republican or Democratic oval is a sacrament. The argument is stewardship of a vote God placed in a constitutional republic, love of neighbor, and not hiding the lamp.

Some pulpits go further. Josh Howerton of Lakepointe Church has said, as a pastoral claim, that not voting is rebellion against God. That is Howerton’s claim. It is not a verse. We will not bind your conscience with a sentence God did not write. We will keep Howerton’s other line, which is simply true: a vote is not a valentine, and Jesus is not on the ballot. Then we return to Scripture.

Stewardship, not a valentine, not a party sacrament

David Barton’s WallBuilders case — restated in our words, not pasted as a sermon — is that the tool changes by generation and the duty does not. The Master did not hand Moses a Florida precinct card. He handed this generation a registration, a party book, and a November amendment sheet. Luke 19:13: “Engage in business until I come.” Matthew 25 is the same idea with talents: what the Master placed in your hands is not yours to bury because the field is imperfect.

A vote is not a valentine. You are not marrying a candidate. You are choosing among the names the law printed. Jesus is not on the ballot in the Republican governor field, on an Orange County mayor line, or on a school-board district. That is not a reason to stay home. It is a reason not to treat a party oval as worship. The live governor overlay — Governor 2026 values — is a comparison of public records, not a prophecy and not a sacrament.

Moses addressed Pharaoh. Daniel served and spoke in a pagan court. Esther risked the throne — “who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14). That is courage, not a party slogan. Nehemiah asked a king for timber and a wall. John the Baptist addressed a ruler’s sin and paid for it. None of those scenes is “vote our slate.” All of them refuse the idea that God’s people have no business near power.

What Scripture actually commands

Proverbs 14:34: “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” The proverb is about a people, not a campaign logo. Proverbs 29:2: “When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan.” If that is true, who sits in the chair is not a hobby. Exodus 18:21 is Jethro to Moses: “look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe.” That is a selection test — ability, fear of God, trustworthiness, hatred of a bribe — not a party platform.

Romans 13:1: there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Romans 13:4 says the ruler “is God’s servant for your good.” That does not baptize every occupant. It does mean the office is not a secular leftover Christians may ignore. 1 Timothy 2:1–2: pray “for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” Prayer is commanded. In a republic the same people you pray for are, in part, the people the public chose.

Jeremiah 29:7: “seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf.” Florida is not Babylon. The principle still travels: seek the city’s good, not only the church parking lot. Micah 6:8: “do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.” Genesis 1:27: “So God created man in his own image… male and female he created them.” Life and dignity are not party inventory. They are why a school-board vote and a governor nomination are not spiritually optional hobbies.

Matthew 5:13–16: “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.” A lamp is not put under a basket. TPUSA Faith’s civic line, in our words, is the same sentence: salt that never leaves the shaker is not obedience. Matthew 22:21: “render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” The vote is one of the things this republic put in Caesar’s process. The conscience is not Caesar’s. Psalm 33:12: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.” That is not a claim that America is Israel. It is a claim that righteousness in public life is not a side project.

Florida mechanics a church voter still has to get right

None of that rewrites Florida law. Florida runs a closed primary. If you are NPA — no party affiliation — you do not get the Republican or Democratic nomination ovals. A lot of church voters sit in that file on purpose. They then discover, on primary day, that the governor line, the House line, and most county-party lines are not on their style. School board is different. Those lines print nonpartisan. NPA voters still vote them. So do Republicans and Democrats. The costume is legal. The values are not interchangeable. Curriculum, parental rights, sports, libraries, and who the board hires are not spiritually empty. Full essay: school boards.

November 3 remains. The three certified statewide amendments print then, not today. They need 60 percent under Article XI. There is no 45 / 35 / 20 card on an amendment. Book-closing for this primary was July 20, 2026. Registration and party for August 18 were already locked. An NPA file could not be repaired on primary day. Nonpartisan lines still printed. November 3 is a separate book.

This guide’s job is a 45 / 35 / 20 values overlay so a church voter can compare public records. Christian 45, Constitution 35, GOP 20. Christian is first on purpose. GOP is third on purpose — honest about party, not worshipful of it. The method is how we score. The object in your hand is how to read a card. November 3 still prints

If you are a Christian in Florida today, the honest sentence is small. The Bible did not write “Thou shalt vote.” It did write salt, light, the city’s welfare, prayer for rulers, justice, and a talent you are not free to bury. Howerton may call staying home rebellion. That is his pastoral claim. Scripture’s claim is narrower and heavier: do not hide the lamp, and do not pretend an empty box produces a better option.
