Candy toys and abortion pills
FedEx shareholders were asked to look at the legal risk of a carrier that will ship abortion pills. Nancy Flanders’s Live Action piece is the source. The same companies write tight rules for candy, toys, and cash. A drug that ends a pregnancy should not be the easy package.
Live Action reports that at FedEx’s annual meeting Pia de Solenni vice president of corporate engagement at Catholic capital advisory firm IWP Capital brought forward a shareholder resolution authored by Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys asking the company to evaluate over the next year how it oversees risks related to distributing mail-order abortion drugs such as mifepristone and to detail any strategies beyond litigation and legal compliance it may use to mitigate those risks. The FedEx board opposed the resolution as not practicable and not a good use of company resources and said adopting it as proposed would bring unnecessary expense and burdens with limited benefit to stockholders while official votes still had to be counted. “FedEx prohibits the shipment of Kinder Surprise Eggs,” de Solenni told The Daily Wire according to Flanders. “If the company can prohibit a candy toy it can prohibit a drug that violates the law in more than 20 states and has harmed a growing number of women not to mention destroyed countless human lives.” Flanders notes Kinder Surprise Eggs are banned in the U.S. over choke fears and that FedEx already bans cigarettes loose tobacco smokeless tobacco e-cigarettes cigars and cash. Seventeen states protect most babies from abortion either from fertilization or after six weeks and shipping the abortion pill into those states can collide with state law while the Comstock Act still sits on the books against mailing abortion-related items. Inspire Investing which earlier convinced Costco not to sell the abortion pill has pressed a similar proposal at UPS. A midterm is not a Kinder Egg. A compliance memo is not Thou shalt not murder.
Being a Christian in America this week is refusing to confuse a Kinder Egg ban with courage and refusing to confuse stockholder language with mercy for the child in the mail-order package. Keep the unborn. Keep the truth about what gets shipped. And do not confuse a midterm with Catholic shareholders telling FedEx that if candy toys are off the truck then abortion pills should be too.
