A locked door that saves a newborn
Alaska’s governor signed a bill that lets a parent surrender a newborn at a safe-haven baby box. Monica Kelsey, who founded Safe Haven Baby Boxes, said Alaska is the 27th state to allow them and that the boxes and the hotline have been part of saving more than 300 babies. Breitbart’s report carries her account. A locked door is not a slogan when the other choice is a dead infant.
Katherine Hamilton’s write-up says Dunleavy signed on September 9. Baby boxes are temperature-controlled incubators built into exterior walls of fire stations police stations and hospitals. A mother places the newborn inside the outside door locks and an alarm alerts first responders who get the baby medical care. In Alaska infants may legally be surrendered within 21 days after birth to baby boxes hospitals fire stations and police stations. State Rep. Sarah Vance said the bill is about something very simple giving a newborn a chance to live and pointed to heartbreaking cases of newborns abandoned outside in the cold including babies found frozen. “No newborn should ever be left outside to face the elements,” she wrote. “If this law saves even one baby’s life it will have been worth it.”
Breitbart notes Safe Haven Baby Boxes founder Monica Kelsey was in Alaska for the signing and said Alaska is the 27th state to allow baby boxes for infant surrenders. “We have saved over 300 babies through our Baby Boxes and the Baby Box hotline,” she said on a Facebook live stream. The organization runs a confidential National Safe Haven Hotline for counseling and safe-surrender information. That is not a slogan. That is a locked door between a desperate parent and a dead infant in the snow.
Being a Christian in America this week is thanking God for every baby who gets medical care instead of the elements and refusing to let culture-war noise drown out a simple law that saves. Keep the box warm. Keep the hotline open. And do not confuse a midterm with the least of these.
